Why Mentor?
|
Mentoring a child truly makes an impact on a child's life. National studies confirm that mentoring has positive effects on youth, including achievement of higher grades in school, better class attendance, improved behavior in school, a reduction in the use of illegal drugs and alcohol, and improved self-confidence and personal skills. By becoming a mentor you are stating that you want to make a difference in the life of a child. Your time will be well spent and your impact on the child's life goes far beyond the one hour, once a week that you spend together.

Steps to Becoming a Mentor
|
Listed below are the steps that state employees must follow in order to start mentoring.
1. Contact your supervisor to determine if you are eligible to work an alternative schedule within the parameters of the alternative work schedule policy. Note: An email approval from your supervisor is needed before you begin exploring mentoring programs.
2. You must volunteer with an affiliate Delaware Mentoring Council Partner Program. To find an affiliate program conveniently located near you, select one from the Program List.
3. Once you have determined a mentoring program at a convenient location you must submit an "Alternative Work Schedule" to your supervisor and wait for signed approval. (See near the bottom of the alternative work schedule policy page for the application form.)
4. With your supervisor's signed approval, visit the Program List and follow the application process for your approved mentoring program.
Note: The Governor's Mentoring Initiative may not be an option for some state employees, as it depends on the nature of their work. Employees must receive approval from their agency head or supervisor prior to researching or commencing service. The time commitment for mentoring a child is one hour per week. The alternative work schedule approval may be necessary to accommodate travel to and from the school location and can be combined with the employee's lunch hour where operationally appropriate and with an employee's supervisor's approval.
